Peer support vs. professional care

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right kind of help.

Peer support and professional mental health care both have value — but they are not the same thing.

Peer support means connecting with others who have lived experience. On TakeMyHand, you can share, listen, and feel less alone. Peers understand — but they are not trained clinicians.

Professional care includes therapy, psychiatry, and medical treatment. A licensed provider can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and deliver evidence-based treatments tailored to you.

When peer support helps: • Feeling understood and less isolated • Learning coping strategies from others' experiences • Building community and belonging • Day-to-day emotional support

When to seek professional help: • Symptoms that persist or worsen over weeks • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or in relationships • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide • Trauma that feels unmanageable alone

TakeMyHand complements professional care — it does not replace it. Using both together is often the strongest approach.
